What the hell is Ground Penetrating Radar?
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an antenna that beams high frequency radio signals down into the earth. When those signals meet an obstruction they bounce back up to the surface where the GPR catches them again. The GPR measures the time between transmitting and receiving the same signal, then using a computer the depth can be calculated. This data gives us our first dimension, vertical.

Another dimension can be added this information. By attaching the antenna to a mobile cart and tracking exactly where the cart is when an underground object is discovered. This can be repeated in any direction, giving the dynamic GPR the power to create 3D underground imaging.
This power is harnessed by underground pipe and cable locators to find pipes that elude electro-magnetic locators. These EM locators rely on pipe and cable materials being conductive so they can transmit a signal through them. When the EM locator comes up against PVC, Poly Ethylene and concrete pipes they’re essentially useless, but this is where the GPR shines.
Find The Pipes Melbourne uses shielded Mala MID 300 MHz antenna GPR to detect and map underground services made from non conductive pipe materials. Please contact us for more tailored advice on how this can help with your next project.
